The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIAL) marked a significant milestone on Friday with its first successful trial landing, paving the way for its expected operational launch early next year. An Indian Air Force C295 multi-role tactical airlifter made the inaugural landing on the airport’s south runway, a moment celebrated with a water salute from the fire brigade and a spectacular flypast by Sukhoi 30 jets.
The development of this new airport, initiated by the Adani Group in 2021, will culminate in the conglomerate’s first greenfield airport upon completion. Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL), expressed pride in the progress made by NMIAL and highlighted the trial landing as a historic moment for Navi Mumbai.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, and Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol. Jeet Adani shared his enthusiasm on the social media platform X, stating, “A historic moment for Navi Mumbai as we celebrate the first landing on the new airport with the Indian Air Force’s C-295! Grateful for the support of @IAF_MCC, including a stunning low pass by the Su-30. This marks the dawn of a new era in Indian aviation, where the sky is no longer the limit. Together, we soar higher!”
Adani further emphasized the significance of NMIAL as AAHL’s first greenfield airport, stating that it represents years of meticulous planning, investment, and hard work. He expressed gratitude towards the Government of Maharashtra, regulatory bodies such as CIDCO and the Airports Authority of India, and all stakeholders involved in bringing the project to fruition. “This world-class airport will play a pivotal role in the region’s growth, serving as a crucial hub for travelers across the globe,” he noted.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde reiterated the importance of the Navi Mumbai airport, stating that it will alleviate congestion at the existing Mumbai airport. He also mentioned that the two airports would be seamlessly connected through metro and road infrastructure, further enhancing accessibility and convenience for travelers.
With the successful trial landing, the Navi Mumbai International Airport is poised to become a major player in Indian aviation, contributing to the region’s economic development and facilitating global connectivity.
