Sultanpur Cobbler Turns Down ₹2 Lakh Bids for Slippers Handmade by Rahul Gandhi

Sultanpur Cobbler Declines ₹2 Lakh Offer for Slippers Stitched by Rahul Gandhi

A pair of slippers stitched by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has become the center of attention in Sultanpur, with offers of up to ₹2 lakh being made to buy them. However, the cobbler, Ramchet, has firmly refused to sell, declaring the slippers a cherished memento.

The story began when Rahul Gandhi visited Ramchet’s shop on July 26 during his personal appearance at an MP/MLA court in a defamation case against him. The case, which dates back to 2018, involved allegations of derogatory remarks made by Gandhi against Union Home Minister Amit Shah. During his visit, Gandhi took a keen interest in the art of shoe-stitching and crafted a slipper himself. As a gesture of goodwill, he later sent Ramchet an electronic shoe-stitching machine.

Since then, the slippers Gandhi stitched have garnered significant interest. Pappu Pandey, a resident of Amethi, noted that Ramchet’s shop has turned into a local attraction. Visitors from various places are stopping by not only to get their shoes polished but also to view the famous slippers.

Ramchet revealed that he has received multiple offers to sell the slippers, starting from ₹1 lakh. Despite the lucrative offers, he has resolutely declined. “Today, a person in a big car offered me ₹1 lakh for the slippers stitched by Rahulji, but I refused. When he insisted, I refused again,” Ramchet stated. He added that a wealthy individual later offered ₹2 lakh, which he also declined.

The cobbler explained that no amount of money could persuade him to part with the slippers. “Even if someone offers ₹1 crore, I will not sell them. They are priceless to me,” Ramchet said. He plans to frame the slippers and display them in his shop as a permanent tribute. “As long as I am alive, I will keep them before me,” he added.
