Elon Musk-led X, formerly known as Twitter, suffered a massive outage on Sunday, leaving thousands of users unable to access the platform. The disruption coincided with a surge in AI-generated Studio Ghibli-style images flooding the platform.
Widespread Impact Across Countries
According to outage-tracking website Downdetector, nearly 10,000 users in the United States reported issues, with around 1,000 complaints from India, 2,000 from the UK, and over 700 from Canada. In the US, about 69% of users encountered problems with the X mobile application, while 24% faced difficulties accessing the website.
Users in India attempting to log in were met with an error message: “Something went wrong. Try reloading.”
As of now, X has not officially addressed the outage, leaving users frustrated and speculating about potential causes.
User Reactions Flood Social Media
Despite the outage, social media users managed to vent their frustrations on other platforms. Some linked the downtime to X’s recent transition following the acquisition by Musk’s AI company, xAI.
- “X is down and I’m stuck with Maynes posts,” one user joked.
- “After the merge, X is down, Grok is down. 🥲” another user commented, referencing X’s AI chatbot.
- “The mighty X servers are finally down,” a third person wrote.
Studio Ghibli AI Trend Overloads X?
The disruption occurred just as AI-generated Studio Ghibli-style images surged in popularity. The trend involves using AI tools like Grok and ChatGPT to transform user photos into artwork resembling the iconic Japanese animation studio’s style.
The surge in demand for AI-generated images may have contributed to the platform’s technical difficulties.
Past Outages and Cyberattack Claims
This is not the first time X has faced a major outage. Earlier this month, the platform suffered widespread downtime, which Musk attributed to a “massive cyberattack.”
“There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X. We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved. Tracing …,” Musk had posted at the time.
Following the previous outage, a pro-Palestinian cyberhacking group, Dark Storm, claimed responsibility, sharing alleged screenshots of their attack on Telegram.
Awaiting Official Response
As users continue to face difficulties, X has yet to provide an official explanation for the latest outage. Whether it was caused by an internal technical failure, overwhelming AI traffic, or another cyberattack remains unknown.
