In a remarkable display of resilience, Wisdom, the world’s oldest known wild bird, has laid an egg at the age of 74, a milestone that has captivated bird lovers and wildlife enthusiasts worldwide. Wisdom, a Laysan albatross, laid her 60th egg this year, marking her return to Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, where she has been nesting for decades.
Wisdom’s incredible journey began when she was first banded as an adult in 1956. Since then, she has become a symbol of endurance, returning annually to the refuge, which is situated at the northwestern edge of the Hawaiian Archipelago. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Pacific Region shared the news of her new egg on social media, inspiring admiration from fans across the globe.
Social media reactions poured in, with many praising the bird’s perseverance and longevity. One user commented, “Incredible! Wisdom, you are my heroine!” Another remarked, “So very, very awesome! Thank you for sharing!”
Wisdom, along with her mate Akeakamai, had been raising chicks together at the refuge since 2006. However, in recent years, Akeakamai has not been spotted, prompting Wisdom to pair with another male upon her return this year. Despite the changes, officials are hopeful that the egg will hatch and continue Wisdom’s legacy of nurturing future generations.
Jonathan Plissner, a supervisory wildlife biologist at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, expressed optimism about the egg’s prospects: “We are optimistic that the egg will hatch.” Albatross parents, known for their dedication, take turns incubating eggs for about two months, with chicks leaving the nest around five to six months later to embark on a life flying across the oceans.
Wisdom has already raised approximately 30 chicks in her lifetime, and her efforts reflect the remarkable survival instincts of the Laysan albatross. These seabirds typically live to be around 68 years old, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
As Wisdom embarks on yet another chapter in her extraordinary life, her journey serves as a testament to nature’s wonders and the enduring spirit of wildlife.
