“Voice-Enabled UPI Payments in Regional Languages on the Horizon”

"Bhashini's Voice-Based UPI Payments to Boost Digital Inclusion Across India"

In a significant move towards fostering digital inclusion and linguistic diversity, Bhashini, the government’s AI language translation platform, is stepping up to empower UPI payments with voice-based services within the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). These new features include voice-activated functionalities for an array of transactions such as checking bank balances, B2B transfers, electricity payments, Fastag recharges, and more, as reported by the Economic Times.

Amitabh Nag, the CEO of Bhashini, expressed, “In some way, we are looking to bridge the digital and literacy divide to a large extent, and for that, it is important for us to facilitate transactions. NPCI is one such case, and the farmer bot (for PM Kisan Yojana) is another case,” highlighting the platform’s dedication to enhancing digital accessibility and convenience. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor, Shaktikanta Das, had previously announced NPCI’s Hello! UPI initiative in September, which aims to enable users to make voice-enabled UPI payments through various channels, including apps, telecom calls, and IoT devices.

Bhashini, India’s artificial intelligence-driven language translation platform, plays a pivotal role in this initiative. Its core mission is to democratize access to the internet and digital services in Indian languages, offering voice-based access and supporting the creation of content in local languages. Furthermore, Bhashini strives to make Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing (NLP) resources available in the public domain, benefitting Indian MSMEs, startups, and individual innovators.

During the 18th G20 Summit held in New Delhi, the Digital India Experience Zone showcased India’s achievements in digital transformation. At the Bhashini exhibit, real-time speech-to-speech translation in multiple Indian languages and six UN languages was demonstrated, illustrating the platform’s potential to bridge linguistic gaps.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised Bhashini’s AI-powered language translation platform as a critical tool for advancing digital inclusion and ensuring that the benefits of the digital age reach every corner of the country. This move to introduce voice-based UPI payments marks a significant step towards a more inclusive and accessible digital landscape for all of India’s diverse linguistic communities.
