Shark Tank judge and Emcure Pharmaceuticals Executive Director Namita Thapar questions the push for excessively long work hours, emphasizing the importance of work-life balance.
As the debate around work-life balance continues to spark discussions, Shark Tank India judge and Emcure Pharmaceuticals Executive Director Namita Thapar has taken a strong stand against the idea of a 70-hour work week. Speaking on the Humans of Bombay podcast, Thapar urged those considering such work schedules to rethink marriage and family life, as such extreme commitments would leave little room for personal relationships.
‘Spare Them the Misery’: Thapar’s Take on Long Working Hours
Thapar questioned how professionals working 70 hours a week, plus additional commitments, could manage family responsibilities.
“You’re working 70 hours a week, then putting in another 30-40 hours elsewhere. You need some sleep too. What time will you give to your child or a spouse who stays at home to take care of the family? If that’s your plan, spare them the misery and mental health issues of having an absent parent,” she said.
Acknowledging that higher corporate positions require long hours, she stressed that companies should ensure reasonable work hours for employees in mid-level or lower ranks.
“For people where the stakes are high, yes, longer hours are expected. But for common employees, there has to be a reasonable limit. A constant 70-hour work week isn’t sustainable,” she added.
The 70-Hour Work Week Debate: Murthy’s Controversial Remark
The 70-hour work week discussion gained momentum after Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy suggested that young professionals should work longer hours to boost India’s productivity.
During a 2023 podcast, Murthy remarked that India’s work productivity was among the lowest in the world, citing historical examples of Germans and Japanese post-World War II, who worked intensely to rebuild their nations.
His views were echoed by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Chairman SN Subrahmanyan, who controversially advocated for a 90-hour work week, including Sundays.
Sudha Murthy’s Opinion on the 70-Hour Work Week
Philanthropist and author Sudha Murthy, Narayana Murthy’s wife, also weighed in on the debate, acknowledging that while longer work hours may help individuals achieve professional success, it is crucial to find a balance between work and personal life.
