Seven members of a family tragically lost their lives and three others remain missing after their SUV was swept away by a swollen seasonal rivulet in Punjab on Sunday. The incident occurred around 34 km from Hoshiarpur, in the Jaijon Choe rivulet, which had overflowed due to recent heavy rainfall affecting several parts of the state and surrounding regions.
The family, comprising ten members and a driver, was en route from Dehra near Mehatpur in Himachal Pradesh to Mehrowal village in SBS Nagar to attend a wedding. As they traveled, their vehicle was overwhelmed by the floodwaters and carried away.
Rescue efforts were able to save one occupant, who was taken to the Government Dispensary in Jaijon. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Jagir Singh, seven bodies, including those of two women, have been recovered from the rivulet.
Authorities are actively working to locate the three missing individuals. The severe weather conditions have made rescue operations challenging as efforts continue to address the aftermath of the tragedy.
