Mumbai Airport to Suspend Operations for 6 Hours on May 9 for Runway Maintenance

Mumbai Airport to Close for Six Hours on May 9 for Runway Maintenance Ahead of Monsoon

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) will temporarily halt flight operations for six hours on May 9 due to scheduled runway maintenance. The maintenance work, which will take place ahead of the monsoon season, is part of the airport’s annual pre-monsoon preparation to ensure the longevity and safety of its infrastructure.

The maintenance work will begin at 11:00 AM and conclude at 5:00 PM, during which both primary runway 09/27 and secondary runway 14/32 will be temporarily non-operational. Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), the private operator of the airport, has already issued a mandatory Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) six months in advance. This early notice ensures that airlines have adequate time to adjust their flight schedules and make necessary arrangements to minimize disruptions.

The scheduled work is essential for maintaining the health of the airport’s airside infrastructure, particularly in preparation for the heavy rainfall and waterlogging that often accompany the monsoon season. Specialists will conduct thorough inspections of the runway surfaces for wear and tear and implement preventive measures to mitigate waterlogging issues. These efforts are crucial to ensuring the safe takeoff and landing of flights during the upcoming monsoon.

MIAL assured travelers that the airport has made arrangements for the temporary shutdown, and that all necessary measures have been taken to minimize inconvenience to passengers. Airlines have been notified to adjust their operations accordingly, and passengers are advised to check with their airlines for any updates or changes to their flight schedules.

The annual maintenance is a crucial step to ensure that CSMIA remains fully operational and safe during the peak monsoon period, supporting the airport’s efforts to provide reliable and efficient services to passengers.
