“Foreign Delegates Embrace UPI Technology During G20 Summit in India”

Foreign Delegates Laud UPI Experience During G20 Summit in India

As foreign delegates gathered in India ahead of the G20 summit, they had the opportunity to experience the convenience and inclusivity of India’s homegrown Unified Payments Interface (UPI) technology. The delegates praised the UPI system, with one describing the experience as “great” and another acknowledging it as their first time using the UPI network.

One delegate shared, “I have been using the G20 UPI application… it has been great. I was able to make my first transactions… it’s been really good. For me, coming from abroad, it is a really great experience to feel included by using the UPI network.”

Another delegate, reflecting on their previous visits to India, remarked, “First time for me… experienced the UPI network. I have been in India a few times but have relied on cash and credit cards.”

India’s G20 Presidency provided an opportunity for the government to showcase the country’s digital public goods and its ambitious “Digital India” initiative. To familiarize approximately 1,000 foreign delegates with the technology behind UPI wallets and the ease of making payments through this solution, the central government offered practical demonstrations.

In an effort to promote UPI adoption among foreign participants, the government allocated funds to load ₹500-1,000 into their UPI wallets for conducting transactions. This initiative was aimed at demonstrating the convenience and efficiency of the UPI system for digital payments.

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has gained immense popularity for retail digital payments in India and is experiencing rapid adoption. In August, UPI transactions crossed the remarkable milestone of 10 billion transactions. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) celebrated this achievement, highlighting the power of digital payments and emphasizing the continued revolution in transaction methods through UPI.
