“Explosion at Andhra Pradesh Pharma Plant Leaves 17 Dead, Multiple Injured”

Tragic Explosion at Andhra Pradesh Pharma Company: 17 Dead, Several Injured

A devastating explosion at a pharmaceutical company in Andhra Pradesh’s Achutapuram Special Economic Zone has resulted in the deaths of at least 17 people, with 41 others injured. The explosion occurred at the Escientia Company, a facility involved in the production of intermediate chemicals and active pharmaceutical ingredients.

The incident took place around lunchtime, which may have prevented an even larger disaster given the reduced number of employees in the plant at that time. The company, which began production in April 2019 with an investment of ₹200 crore, employs approximately 380 people who work in two shifts.

Initial reports suggest that the explosion was not caused by a reactor blast, but possibly by an electricity-related fire, though investigations are ongoing. The injured have been taken to NTR Hospital for treatment, and the site has been secured by six fire engines and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), which was called in for rescue operations.

Visuals from the site show smoke billowing from the plant, engulfing nearby villages and raising concerns among local residents. The accident has prompted a swift response from the state government, with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu planning to visit the site. The Chief Minister has also ordered an inquiry into the incident and emphasized the need to establish accountability.

The Collector of Anakapalle confirmed that 13 people trapped inside the unit have been rescued. Authorities are now focusing on controlling the fire and ensuring the safety of the surrounding area as investigations continue.

The explosion at Escientia has sent shockwaves through the region, highlighting the need for stringent safety protocols in industrial zones. The company, located on a 40-acre campus of Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation, will now face scrutiny as officials work to determine the cause of this tragic event.
