Elon Musk Thanks Indian-Origin Engineer for Tesla’s AI Success

Elon Musk Acknowledges Indian-Origin Engineer for Tesla's AI Advancements

In a recent tweet, Elon Musk expressed his gratitude to Ashok Elluswamy, an Indian-origin engineer and the first person hired for Tesla’s autopilot team, for his contribution to Tesla’s success in artificial intelligence (AI) and autopilot software.

Musk credited Elluswamy for his pivotal role in Tesla’s AI journey, mentioning that he initially joined as the first member of the AI/Autopilot team and eventually became the leader of AI/Autopilot software. Musk’s tweet came in response to a note shared by Elluswamy on X (formerly Twitter), where he highlighted Musk’s relentless drive and vision in pushing the boundaries of AI and autonomy at Tesla.

Elluswamy recounted an anecdote from 2014 when Tesla’s Autopilot project began on a remarkably small computer with limited memory and computing power. Despite initial skepticism within the team about implementing complex features like lane keeping and longitudinal control, Musk’s unwavering determination led to the successful launch of Tesla’s Autopilot system in 2015, ahead of competitors.

Furthermore, Elluswamy praised Musk for steering Tesla towards developing in-house computer vision technology for Autopilot, a move that was initially met with skepticism but ultimately proved to be strategically vital for Tesla’s AI capabilities.

Musk’s foresight in investing in AI software and hardware, including custom silicon for neural networks, was highlighted by Elluswamy as a key factor in Tesla’s success in autonomy. He also mentioned Musk’s early initiatives in humanoid robots, showcasing Musk’s visionary approach to AI long before it became a mainstream topic.

Elluswamy concluded by emphasizing Musk’s technical acumen, perseverance, and ambition as crucial elements that have positioned Tesla as a leader in real-world AI applications. He underscored Musk’s role in pushing the boundaries of technology and paving the way for fully autonomous cars and household robots.
