Elon Musk Compares Brazil’s Chief Justice to Voldemort

In a recent and provocative social media post, billionaire Elon Musk compared Brazil’s Chief Justice Alexandre de Moraes to the notorious Harry Potter villain, Lord Voldemort. The comparison, made in a tweet on X (formerly Twitter), has gone viral and ignited further controversy.

Musk’s tweet featured side-by-side images of Judge Moraes and Voldemort, with the caption, “The resemblance is uncanny. Alexandre de Voldemort.” The comparison drew significant attention, particularly after an X user created a video that transitioned from showing Judge Moraes in a black cloak to morphing him into Voldemort wielding a wand.

This incident follows a major development involving X’s operations in Brazil. On Saturday, the social media giant announced it would be ceasing its operations in the country, citing an ongoing legal battle with Judge Moraes as the primary reason. The shutdown was described as “effective immediately,” although Brazilian users will still have access to the platform.

The legal conflict between X and Judge Moraes has been escalating for some time. Earlier this year, Moraes ordered X to block certain accounts accused of spreading disinformation and hate speech, particularly those linked to supporters of former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro had questioned the integrity of Brazil’s electronic voting system, a stance that intensified tensions leading up to the 2022 election.

Moraes, who also oversees Brazil’s Superior Electoral Tribunal, has been an outspoken advocate against disinformation. He has argued that freedom of expression should not equate to freedom to spread falsehoods or support tyranny. “Freedom of expression doesn’t mean freedom of aggression,” Moraes stated in a previous interview.

The situation took a further turn when X claimed that Moraes had secretly threatened one of its legal representatives with arrest if the platform did not comply with orders to remove certain content. “To protect the safety of our staff, we have made the decision to close our operation in Brazil,” X said in a statement.

Elon Musk, known for his controversial statements, intensified his criticism of Moraes, calling him “an utter disgrace to justice” in a follow-up post on X. Earlier this year, Moraes had also initiated an inquiry into Musk and X after the latter announced plans to reactivate accounts that Moraes had previously ordered to be blocked.

The comparison of Judge Moraes to Voldemort reflects the heightened tensions between X and Brazilian authorities, revealing the deepening rift over issues of content regulation and freedom of expression on social media platforms.
