Elon Musk has sparked a heated debate on social media by accusing WhatsApp of exporting user data every night. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO took to his platform X (formerly Twitter) to voice his concerns, stating, “WhatsApp exports your user data every night. Some people still think it is secure.”
In response, WhatsApp chief Will Cathcart refuted Musk’s claims, emphasizing the platform’s commitment to security. Cathcart stated, “Many have said this already, but worth repeating: this is not correct. We take security seriously and that’s why we end-to-end encrypt your messages.” He further clarified that user data is not sent or exported every night, and highlighted that users can back up their messages using their cloud provider, with the option of end-to-end encryption.
This exchange is the latest in a series of public disputes between Musk and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Since Musk’s acquisition of X in 2022, tensions between the two tech moguls have been mounting. The rivalry escalated when Musk challenged Zuckerberg to a cage fight, recently declaring on X, “I’m ready to fight Zuck anywhere, anytime with any rules. LFG!!!”
