unique tea offering at an Indian-origin cafe in Dubai is making headlines, with a cup of ‘Gold Karak’ tea priced at a staggering ₹1 lakh (5,000 AED). The extravagant beverage, created by Sucheta Sharma, the owner of Boho Cafe, has garnered both intrigue and criticism, sparking a debate on social media.
Boho Cafe, located at Dubai’s Emirates Financial Towers, opened last month and has quickly become famous for its luxurious menu items. Among these, the ‘Gold Karak’ tea stands out, served in pure silver teacups with a 24-carat gold leaf topping, making it a lavish indulgence for those seeking something extraordinary.
Sharma, originally from India, explained that Boho Cafe caters to two distinct customer groups. The cafe offers both affordable Indian street food options and premium choices like the ‘Gold Karak’ tea. In an interview with Khaleej Times, Sharma emphasized the concept of duality in the cafe’s menu, stating, “We wanted to create something extraordinary for those seeking indulgence, while also catering to the wider community.”
In addition to the gold tea, the cafe offers other opulent treats, including gold coffee, gold-infused water, gold burgers (with veg and paneer options), and even gold ice cream. Each of these premium offerings comes with a gold-dusted croissant, served on silverware that customers can keep as a souvenir.
For those who are intrigued by the concept but find the ₹1 lakh price tag excessive, Boho Cafe offers a more affordable version of the gold tea, priced at 150 AED (₹3,500), which omits the silver cups.
Despite the cafe’s attempts to blend luxury with local tastes, reactions on social media have been mixed. While some have called the experience “unique” and “worth the splurge,” others have expressed skepticism. One Instagram user questioned, “Now why in the world would I want to eat gold in my coffee and croissant?” Another joked, “Do I have to declare to customs before going on a flight after having this?”
Boho Cafe’s ‘Gold Karak’ tea, along with its other gold-infused offerings, has certainly put Dubai’s café scene in the spotlight, making it a must-visit for those seeking a taste of luxury or simply to experience a tea break like no other. Whether this trend will catch on with the wider public or remain a niche offering for the city’s elite remains to be seen.
However, with Dubai known for its extravagant dining experiences, it seems that there’s always room for the opulent and the unconventional.
