Delhi Airport: T1 to Become Fully Operational from April 15 as T2 Closes for Refurbishment

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) is set for a major transition as Terminal 1 (T1) becomes fully operational on April 15, while Terminal 2 (T2) will shut down next month for refurbishment. The announcement was made by Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), the airport’s operator, on Thursday.

With this move, all flights operating from T2, including those of IndiGo and Akasa Air, will be transferred to T1. T2 currently handles around 270-280 air traffic movements and serves over 46,000 passengers per day. The closure of T2 is part of a planned modernization effort, which was previously announced in January. The renovation is expected to take between four to six months, with completion targeted before September.

Expansion and Facilities at T1

The expansion and modernization of T1 were carried out as part of the Phase 3A expansion project. The upgraded T1, inaugurated in March last year, now features improved infrastructure designed to enhance passenger experience.

Some of the key upgrades at T1 include:

  • 100 check-in counters, including 36 Self Baggage Drop (SBD) booths
  • 108 Common Usage Self-Service (CUSS) kiosks for check-in
  • 20 Automated Tray Retrieval Systems (ATRS) to speed up security clearance
  • 10 baggage reclaim carousels
  • A baggage handling system that can process up to 6,000 bags per hour, up from 3,240 bags per hour
  • An expanded terminal area from 55,740 sq m to 2,06,950 sq m
  • Integration of arrival and departure terminals for a seamless passenger experience

Following this expansion, T1 can now accommodate 40 million passengers annually, while T3 can handle 45 million and T2 has a capacity of 15 million passengers per year.

Transition Plan

DIAL has assured that airlines have been informed in advance to manage their operations smoothly during the transition. Passengers traveling from April 15 onwards are advised to check their flight details and terminal assignments beforehand to avoid any inconvenience.

With the expansion of T1 and the upcoming refurbishment of T2, IGI Airport continues its efforts to enhance efficiency and provide a world-class experience for travelers.
