A humanoid robot from China has captured global attention with its jaw-dropping martial arts skills. Developed by Chinese robotics startup Unitree, the robot, named G1, has been seen executing precise kung fu moves, roundhouse kicks, and even a side flip with remarkable agility and balance.
Kung Fu Moves That Impress
A recent video of the ‘Kung Fu bot’ showcasing its martial arts tricks has gone viral on social media, leaving netizens stunned. The G1 humanoid robot features 23 joints, allowing it to move with fluidity and precision. Designed to mimic human actions, the robot learned its skills through motion capture, video data, and reinforcement learning in a virtual environment before performing them in the real world.
Unitree used Nvidia’s Isaac Simulator to train the G1 in a digital setting, where a “digital twin” of the robot was created before its physical construction. This Sim2Real technology seamlessly transfers its virtual learning into real-world execution, making the G1 capable of advanced movements.
Beyond Martial Arts: A Versatile Humanoid
While its kung fu skills have gained attention, Unitree claims that the G1 humanoid is much more than a martial artist. The company envisions the robot assisting in various settings, including homes, factories, and hospitals, showcasing its potential beyond entertainment.
A New Era for Humanoid Robots
The viral video of G1 comes just after American robot maker Figure AI announced an automated production line that could manufacture 12,000 humanoids per year. Additionally, China’s Midea Group also unveiled a self-developed humanoid prototype, signaling intense competition in the field.
Wu Tingting, an analyst at Shanghai Securities, noted in a research report that the humanoid robotics industry is advancing rapidly. She described the recent surge in innovation as a “let a hundred flowers bloom” moment, reflecting the increasing number of companies entering the sector.
