The Narendra Modi government has approved a landmark infrastructure initiative, sanctioning eight major National High-Speed Road Corridor Projects at a total cost of ₹50,655 crore. Announced on Friday, these projects collectively span 936 kilometers and aim to bolster logistics efficiency, mitigate congestion, and enhance connectivity across India.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the approval, highlighting the significance of these projects for the nation’s transportation network. “The Cabinet has approved these eight crucial high-speed road corridors to improve logistics efficiency, reduce congestion, and enhance connectivity across the country,” Vaishnaw stated.
The approved projects include:
- The six-lane Agra-Gwalior National High-Speed Corridor
- The four-lane Kharagpur-Moregram National High-Speed Corridor
- The six-lane Tharad-Deesa-Mehsana-Ahmedabad National High-Speed Corridor
- The four-lane Ayodhya Ring Road
- The five-lane section between Pathalgaon and Gumla on the Raipur-Ranchi National High-Speed Corridor
- The six-lane Kanpur Ring Road
- The four-lane Northern Guwahati Bypass and the widening/improvement of the existing Guwahati Bypass
- The eight-lane elevated Nashik Phata-Khed Corridor near Pune
Vaishnaw also emphasized the government’s commitment to infrastructure development, citing the recent mandate given to Prime Minister Modi and the continued investment in major projects like the Vadhavan Port, with ₹76,000 crore allocated for its development.
According to the government, the increase in capital investment in National Highways has been significant, growing sixfold from ₹50,000 crore in 2013-14 to approximately ₹3.1 lakh crore in 2023-24. This expansion reflects a strategic shift towards a corridor-based development approach, focusing on consistent standards, user convenience, and logistics efficiency, compared to the previous project-based approach.
“Infrastructure development is fundamental to economic prosperity and significantly improves the quality of life for citizens,” the government’s statement noted, emphasizing the multiplier effect of infrastructure spending on the national GDP.
