Bill Gates Opens Up About Divorce from Melinda: ‘Greatest Mistake’ and Life After Separation

In a candid interview with The Times, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates admitted that divorcing his ex-wife, Melinda French Gates, remains one of his biggest regrets. The billionaire philanthropist reflected on the emotional toll of their split, calling it his “greatest mistake.”

Reflecting on Regret and Moving Forward
The former couple, who were married for 27 years and share three children, announced their divorce in May 2021 after a year of separation. Gates acknowledged the pain caused by the divorce, stating, “The divorce thing was miserable for me and Melinda for at least two years.” Despite this, the two have maintained a close friendship, prioritizing their family.

“Melinda and I still spend time together as a family. We have three children and two grandchildren, so there are always family events,” Gates said. He highlighted that his children—Jennifer (28), Rory (25), and Phoebe (22)—are doing well and have “strong values.”

Life After the Divorce
Now 69, Gates has found companionship with Paula Hurd, the widow of former Oracle CEO Mark Hurd. The couple made their first public appearance together in April 2024 at the Breakthrough Prize Ceremony. Paula, a mother of two, and Gates have been seen together on numerous occasions since.

Meanwhile, Melinda has also moved on, dating entrepreneur Philip Vaughn, who previously worked as a programmer at Microsoft for nearly nine years. Vaughn is now the founder and chairman of Tavour, a craft beer delivery company.

Looking Back at the Reasons for the Split
Gates admitted in 2022 to causing pain in his marriage, referencing an alleged affair with a Microsoft employee. Melinda had also cited Gates’ association with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein as a significant factor in their decision to separate, describing it as “abhorrent.”

Despite their differences and the challenges during their separation, both Gates and Melinda have emphasized their commitment to co-parenting and maintaining a healthy family dynamic for the sake of their children and grandchildren.

As Gates continues to build his relationship with Paula and Melinda pursues her own fresh start with Philip, the pair have set an example of navigating life post-divorce with dignity and mutual respect.
