Apple Plans to Create 500,000 Jobs in India, Accelerates Hiring and Manufacturing Expansion

Apple is poised to become a major job creator in India, with plans to generate nearly half a million jobs in the country over the next three years through its vendors and component suppliers, according to government sources as reported by PTI.

The tech giant’s move to ramp up hiring and manufacturing in India comes as part of its efforts to diversify its manufacturing base away from China, especially after facing challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic that strained global supply chains. India has emerged as a strategic destination for Apple to establish a strong foothold, with the company making significant strides towards setting up a permanent base in the country.

Apple’s focus is not just on infrastructure but also on prioritizing the well-being of its employees in India. Reports suggest that the company is planning housing accommodations for its staff and is actively increasing its workforce. The primary job creator in this endeavor is Tata Electronics, which operates two plants for Apple in India.

A senior government official stated, “Apple is accelerating hiring in India. At a conservative estimate, it is going to employ five lakh people in the next three years through its vendors and components suppliers.”

This massive hiring initiative aligns with Apple’s ambitious goal of scaling up production in India by more than five times, reaching around $40 billion within just 4-5 years. The significant investment in infrastructure and human resources is already yielding results, with Apple leading the Indian market in revenue for the first time in 2023, as reported by Counterpoint Research. However, Samsung remains ahead in terms of volume sales.

Apple’s success in India is evident from its shipments surpassing the 10-million-unit mark and securing the top spot in revenue for the first time in a calendar year. Additionally, the company’s iPhone exports from India saw a substantial increase to $12.1 billion in 2023-24 from $6.27 billion in the previous year, marking nearly 100% growth, according to The Trade Vision.

While Apple has not officially commented on these projections or claims, its accelerated hiring and manufacturing expansion in India are indicative of the company’s long-term commitment to the Indian market and its potential to become a significant contributor to the country’s employment and economic growth.
