In a significant move to empower farmers and promote the cooperative model, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah inaugurated 10,000 newly established multipurpose Primary Agricultural and Dairy Cooperative Societies (PACS) on Wednesday. This initiative is part of the government’s ambitious plan to establish 200,000 such rural enterprises across the country.
The launch event, held at the Pusa complex in the national capital, highlighted the government’s commitment to enhancing farmers’ access to markets. Amit Shah emphasized that these PACS will focus on the marketing of organic products, dairy production, and seeds, with the added goal of expanding exports. The initiative is seen as a vital step toward achieving prosperity through cooperatives, a vision promoted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi under the motto ‘Sahkar Se Samriddhi’ (prosperity through cooperatives).
The inauguration also coincided with the birth centenary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who was instrumental in the enactment of the 97th Constitutional Amendment. This amendment gave constitutional status and protection to cooperative societies in India, helping revitalize a long-overlooked sector that plays a crucial role in the nation’s rural economy.
At the event, Shah emphasized that the establishment of these multipurpose PACS is aimed at integrating cooperatives into every panchayat, thereby enabling them to contribute significantly to rural development. He added that the Modi government plans to further facilitate farmers by providing them with micro ATMs and RuPay Kisan Credit Cards, offering low-cost finance options and bridging the gap for primary dairy farmers.
Shah also underscored the role of computerization in increasing the transparency and efficiency of PACS, which has helped expand cooperative activities and create new employment opportunities, particularly for women and youth. Through these modernized PACS, farmers will gain access to a variety of services, including storage, manure, gas, fertilizer, and water distribution.
The minister revealed that so far, 11,695 new primary cooperative societies have been registered under the new model by-laws, marking a significant milestone. Shah further noted that three new national-level cooperatives will be established this year, which will unlock more opportunities for farmers, especially in the promotion of organic products and quality seeds, as well as boosting exports.
This launch represents a transformative shift in India’s agricultural landscape, where cooperatives are poised to play a key role in the economic empowerment of farmers and the overall development of rural India.
