Air India celebrated a milestone on Sunday as its inaugural Airbus A320neo aircraft, adorned in a fresh livery, touched down at the Indira Gandhi International Airport from Toulouse, France. The arrival marks a significant addition to the airline’s fleet, promising enhanced passenger comfort and operational efficiency.
The A320neo joins Air India with a distinctive three-class configuration. It boasts eight luxurious Business Class seats, 24 Premium Economy seats offering extra legroom, and 132 Economy Class seats, providing a range of choices to cater to diverse passenger preferences, as stated by the company.
In a statement, Air India highlighted the introduction of Premium Economy cabins on narrow-body aircraft as a pioneering move for the airline, aimed at enriching the travel experience for passengers.
Scheduled to commence domestic operations in August, the A320neo is set to service short-haul routes within India. Currently, three A320neo aircraft in similar three-class setups, albeit with the old Air India livery, are already operational across the domestic network.
Looking ahead, Air India plans to further elevate its service standards with new, upgraded, and refurbished aircraft set to join both its narrow-body and wide-body fleets starting early next year.
The airline’s strategic fleet expansion and upgrade initiative follows a revision in its aircraft order last December. Initially placing an order for 250 aircraft with Airbus in 2022, including 210 narrow-body A320 family jets (comprising 140 A320neo and 70 A321neo) and 40 wide-body A350s (including six A350-900 and 34 A350-1000), Air India has since adjusted the order to 140 A321neo and 70 A320neo aircraft.
