Air India has unveiled ambitious plans to establish South Asia’s largest Flying Training Organisation (FTO) in Maharashtra’s Amravati, with operations set to commence by early 2026. This initiative marks a significant milestone as the first FTO by any Indian airline in the country.
The facility, located at Belora airport and licensed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), aims to churn out 180 commercial pilots annually. Equipped with 31 single-engine and 3 twin-engine aircraft for comprehensive training, the FTO will play a pivotal role in bolstering India’s aviation sector.
Campbell Wilson, Managing Director and CEO of Air India, emphasized the strategic importance of the Amravati FTO in enhancing India’s aviation self-reliance. “This initiative will open new avenues for aspiring pilots across India, enabling them to realize their dreams of flying,” Wilson stated.
Air India secured the project through a tender awarded by the Maharashtra Airport Development Company for a 30-year tenure. The FTO promises world-class training aligned with global standards, aimed at addressing the burgeoning demand for skilled aviation professionals in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.
Sunil Bhaskaran, Director of the Aviation Academy of Air India, underscored the academy’s role in supporting the government’s vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). “We are committed to developing robust aviation infrastructure and contributing to India’s aviation growth story,” Bhaskaran affirmed.
Aviation consultancy CAPA highlighted the critical manpower shortages in the industry, including pilots and aircraft maintenance engineers (AMEs). The introduction of new flight duty time limitations and poaching by Middle Eastern carriers further exacerbate these challenges.
Earlier this year, Air India announced plans for another flagship training academy in Gurugram, spanning 600,000 square feet, underscoring its commitment to nurturing talent and bolstering aviation capabilities in the region.
This strategic move by Air India is poised to not only meet the industry’s growing demand for skilled pilots but also strengthen India’s position as a hub for aviation training and education in South Asia.
