Air India has announced a reduction in its free check-in baggage allowance from 20kg to 15kg for the lowest economy fare segment on domestic flights. This change comes as part of the menu-based pricing model fare families introduced by the Tata Group-owned airline last August.
The move to menu-based pricing aims to provide passengers with more options and flexibility in choosing fares and services that best suit their needs. Prior to this change, passengers on Air India’s domestic flights were allowed 25 kg of check-in baggage free of any additional charge.
The menu-based pricing model categorizes fares into three groups – Comfort, Comfort Plus, and Flex – each offering distinct benefits and fare restrictions at different price points. The Comfort and Comfort Plus categories now provide a 15 kg baggage allowance, while the Flex category offers a 25 kg allowance. Business Class baggage allowances range from 25 kg to 35 kg on domestic routes.
An Air India spokesperson explained that the fare difference between Comfort Plus and Flex fares is typically around ₹1,000 on routes like Delhi-Mumbai, with Flex fares providing additional benefits such as 10kg extra baggage and zero change or cancellation fees.
The introduction of fare families is a response to customer feedback and Air India’s comprehensive study, benchmarked against the offerings of competitors in each market. The spokesperson emphasized that this approach allows passengers to select fares and services based on their preferences and requirements.
These changes are effective from May 2, 2024, and apply to domestic routes in Economy Class. The airline’s spokesperson noted that the free baggage allowance on international flights varies depending on the market.
