Air India Express Crew Returns to Duty After Mass Sick Leave, Services Expected to Normalize by Tuesday

In a recent development, Air India Express, owned by the Tata Group, is gradually resuming its flight operations after facing disruptions due to a mass sick leave taken by cabin crew members. The airline, which operates numerous daily flights, experienced cancellations and service interruptions but is now on track to restore normalcy by Tuesday.

The disruption stemmed from a glitch in the airline’s scheduling software, which erroneously indicated that a significant number of staff were on sick leave. This led to the cancellation of around 20 flights on Sunday, impacting the airline’s operations. However, all cabin crew members who were reported sick have since returned to duty as of May 11, 2024, according to a statement from the Air India Express Employees Union.

The disruption comes on the heels of a strike initiated by cabin crew members earlier in the week, citing alleged mismanagement by the airline. The strike resulted in the cancellation of hundreds of flights, causing significant inconvenience to passengers. However, following a conciliation meeting facilitated by the chief labour commissioner in Delhi, the strike was called off on Thursday, and termination letters issued to 25 cabin crew members were withdrawn.

Air India Express expressed satisfaction with the progress made during the conciliation meeting and welcomed back its cabin crew colleagues. The airline apologized to passengers affected by the disruptions and assured them of efforts to swiftly restore the flight schedule. Passengers were urged to check their flight status before heading to the airport as operations gradually return to normal.

The incident at Air India Express follows similar disruptions in the aviation sector, such as Vistara’s cancellation of flight services due to crew unavailability in April. These incidents highlight the challenges faced by airlines in managing workforce issues and ensuring uninterrupted services for passengers.

Air India Express is a prominent player in the aviation industry, operating over 2,500 flights weekly across domestic and international routes. The airline, with a fleet comprising Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s, serves 31 domestic and 14 international airports.

As Air India Express works towards restoring full operational capacity, the incident underscores the importance of effective workforce management and contingency planning in the aviation sector. Passengers are advised to stay updated on flight status information provided by the airline to minimize inconvenience during this transition period.
