Reddit, a popular social news aggregation and discussion platform, has suffered a second significant outage within 24 hours, impacting thousands of users across the United States. The issue was tracked by Downdetector, which reported over 70,000 outage reports, primarily from Reddit users in the US. The outage left many unable to access both the website and mobile app, disrupting the usual activity on the platform.
According to Downdetector’s data, the outage was widespread, with 52% of users facing problems accessing Reddit’s website, while 46% encountered issues on the mobile app. Although the situation gradually improved, the number of outage reports dropped from more than 70,000 to under 21,000, indicating that the platform was coming back online.
The latest disruption follows a previous outage just a day earlier, which had caused similar issues for users trying to access Reddit. That earlier outage was attributed to a software bug, and Reddit announced that a fix was deployed, allowing the platform to resume functioning. However, despite the fix, users once again faced difficulties accessing the site and app.
In India, the outage was less severe, with under 700 reports of issues, but users still experienced intermittent access, especially on the website. As of 9 pm local time on Thursday, 53% of Indian users reported problems with the website, while 38% struggled with the app.
The issues reported ranged from delays in loading comments and content to full access failures, with Reddit users encountering a custom error page during the downtime. Reddit acknowledged the problem and posted an update on its official account on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the platform was investigating the outage. However, the company did not provide a clear timeline for resolution or any details regarding the underlying cause.
Reddit is widely known as the “front page of the internet” due to its vast range of trending topics, niche communities, and in-depth discussions on various issues. The site has millions of users worldwide, who rely on it for news, information, and community engagement. Despite the repeated technical issues, Reddit remains one of the most influential platforms on the internet.
As the company works to resolve these technical difficulties, users are hopeful for a swift recovery of the platform to continue their participation in the vast range of discussions and communities it hosts.
