Telegram’s Co-Founder Pavel Durov Announces User Data May Be Shared with Authorities Upon Request

Telegram Can Share User Data with Authorities, Co-Founder Pavel Durov Reveals

In a significant policy shift, Pavel Durov, co-founder of the encrypted messaging service Telegram, announced that the platform can disclose user data to authorities upon receiving valid legal requests. This revelation was made through a post on Durov’s Telegram channel, outlining updates to the service’s terms and privacy policies.

“We’ve made it clear that the IP addresses and phone numbers of those who violate our rules can be disclosed to relevant authorities in response to valid legal requests,” Durov stated. The changes aim to create a uniform policy globally and to deter criminals from exploiting Telegram’s search features for illegal activities.

Durov emphasized that recent modifications were implemented to combat the misuse of Telegram’s search function, which some users had been exploiting to sell illegal goods. He noted that the Telegram team has taken steps to remove problematic content from searches over the past few weeks.

The announcement follows a turbulent period for Durov, who was detained in Paris last month on charges related to Telegram’s management of its user base, including failure to act against cyberbullying, the sharing of pedophilic content, and the glorification of terrorism. After being released on a $5.6 million bail, Durov is currently under judicial supervision and prohibited from leaving France.

The new policy marks a pivotal moment for Telegram, as it balances user privacy with legal compliance, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by encrypted messaging services in addressing unlawful behavior while maintaining user trust.

As Telegram continues to navigate these complex issues, Durov’s recent comments indicate a shift towards a more cooperative approach with law enforcement agencies, raising important questions about privacy and data security for its global user base.
