Nvidia is developing a new version of its flagship AI chip, specifically designed for the Chinese market, according to sources familiar with the matter. The chip, tentatively named the “B20,” is expected to be launched in collaboration with Inspur, a major distributor partner in China.
The move comes as Nvidia responds to tightened U.S. export controls implemented in March 2023. These regulations aim to limit the export of advanced semiconductors to China, particularly those that could enhance its military capabilities. Despite these restrictions, Nvidia is advancing its AI technology with tailored solutions for the Chinese market.
Nvidia’s latest chip series, dubbed “Blackwell,” was introduced earlier this year and includes the B200 model. This chip boasts a significant performance increase, being up to 30 times faster than its predecessor in certain tasks, such as generating responses from chatbots.
The B20, part of this series, is designed to comply with current U.S. export regulations while meeting the needs of the Chinese market. Nvidia is collaborating with Inspur for the chip’s launch and distribution. The company has not yet made an official announcement, and both Nvidia and Inspur have declined to comment on the development.
Since the implementation of export restrictions, Nvidia has been working on several chips specifically adapted for China, reflecting the company’s strategic response to evolving geopolitical and regulatory landscapes.
