Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal responded to recent controversy surrounding an inspection at a Zomato Hyperpure warehouse in Hyderabad, where officials discovered food products marked with a “future date of packing.” The incident, which occurred during a routine food safety check on October 29, 2024, involved 18 kilos of button mushrooms displaying a packing date of October 30, 2024—one day after the actual inspection. The discovery quickly gained attention online, prompting Goyal to issue a public statement on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to clarify the situation.
In his November 4 post, Goyal acknowledged the issue, stating that 90 packets of mushrooms were indeed flagged by food safety officials. He explained that the anomaly was identified in the warehouse’s quality check process and attributed it to “a manual typing error on the vendor’s side.” Goyal emphasized that incidents of this nature are rare and noted that the responsible vendor has since been removed from Zomato’s network.
“We have stringent inward guidelines and tech systems that helped our teams identify this error in time,” Goyal said. “We are committed to upholding industry food safety standards and ensure that product quality is never compromised at any stage of the supply chain.” He also shared that despite the flagged issues, the warehouse received an A+ rating, the highest possible grade in the food safety inspection ranking system.
Zomato’s Hyperpure warehouse in Hyderabad supplies fresh produce, groceries, meat, and other essentials to hotels, restaurants, and caterers. Following the incident, Goyal reiterated Zomato’s dedication to quality control, highlighting the company’s focus on thorough inspections across its supply chain.
This is not the first time Goyal has drawn attention on social media. Recently, he made headlines by sharing his response to requests for free tickets to the upcoming Zomato Feeding India Concert 2024, headlined by international pop star Dua Lipa.
