Wholesale Cloth Dealers in Bengaluru Halt Trade with Turkey, Azerbaijan

In a strong show of solidarity with the Indian government, the Bengaluru Wholesale Cloth Merchants Association (BWCMA) has announced a complete suspension of textile trade with Turkey and Azerbaijan. The decision, effective immediately, comes in response to what the association describes as the two nations’ recent “support” for Pakistan following India’s military action under ‘Operation Sindoor’.

BWCMA President Prakash Pirgal confirmed the unanimous decision taken by the association’s governing body, stating that the move aligns with the community’s commitment to ethical business practices and national sentiment.

“This collective action has been taken after careful deliberation and in alignment with our commitment to ethical business practices, national sentiment, and the interests of our trade community. As responsible stakeholders in the textile trade sector, we believe it is essential to take principled stands when necessary,” Pirgal said in an official statement.

The association, comprising around 3,000 wholesale textile businesses across Bengaluru, has resolved to:

  • Halt all current and future imports of textile goods from Turkey and Azerbaijan.
  • Cease all ongoing or planned export activities to these nations.
  • Refrain from indirect trade through intermediaries or third-party countries involving textile goods from or destined for Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Pirgal noted that the trade volume with these two countries runs into crores of rupees, although specific figures were not disclosed. “A lot of cloth material comes from there and also gets exported, but the country comes first,” he added.

Explaining the motivation behind the decision, Pirgal recalled India’s humanitarian assistance to Turkey during a devastating earthquake. “India acted as a first responder during their time of need, yet today, they stand by Pakistan, which sent terrorists to kill our people. We strongly condemn this.”

The resolution will remain in effect until further notice. The BWCMA has urged logistics providers, trade partners, and relevant authorities to take note of the decision and assist in its enforcement.

The announcement marks a rare example of a trade organization taking a foreign policy-aligned stand, reflecting a growing trend of domestic industry groups asserting their positions on geopolitical developments.
