TCS Shifts Gears: Employees to Return to Office Five Days a Week from October 1

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a leading IT services provider, is making a significant change to its remote work policy. In a recent internal communication, the company has announced that it will discontinue hybrid work arrangements, requiring all its employees to return to the office for five days a week starting from October 1, 2023.

This decision represents a marked departure from TCS’ previous stance, which, since September 2022, had permitted employees to work from the office for three days a week while working remotely for the remaining two days. TCS is among the many IT companies that adopted hybrid work models during the pandemic, aligning with broader industry trends.

While the transition mandate to five days a week is not yet uniform across all divisions, there have been reports that managers in various sections have been encouraging employees to return to the office more frequently. TCS, however, clarified that it will retain flexibility and allow exceptions where necessary, indicating that some degree of remote work may still be accommodated on a case-by-case basis.

According to an internal email accessed by CNBC-TV18, TCS CEO and the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) have communicated the change to all associates. The email stated, “It is mandatory for all associates to attend the office on all working days (five days a week if there are no holidays) starting from October 1, 2023.”

TCS had previously cautioned employees about adhering to the three-day office presence roster and warned of potential consequences for non-compliance. However, the new mandate appears to be more stringent, aligning with the company’s evolving approach to workplace arrangements.

Notably, this shift in TCS’ remote work policy contradicts former CEO Rajesh Gopinathan’s “25 X 25” vision, which he unveiled in 2020. According to this vision, by 2025, only 25 percent of TCS associates would need to work from office facilities at any given time, and employees would not spend more than 25 percent of their time at the office. This vision was in line with global trends favoring greater flexibility in work arrangements.

In its FY23 annual report, TCS reported that over half of its workforce had been hired after March 2020, reflecting a significant shift in the composition of its employee base.

TCS’s decision to return to a predominantly office-based work model reflects the ongoing debate within the IT industry about the balance between remote work convenience and the benefits of physical interactions and workplace engagement, particularly for junior employees. This move may have implications for other IT companies as they assess their own remote work policies in the post-pandemic landscape.
