Google CEO Sundar Pichai Receives Honorary Doctorate from IIT Kharagpur

Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google and Alphabet, was honored with an honorary Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) degree by his alma mater, IIT Kharagpur, during a ceremony held in San Francisco. This prestigious recognition highlights Pichai’s significant contributions to technology and his alma mater’s impact on his career.

The ceremony also celebrated Pichai’s wife, Anjali Pichai, who was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award for her notable achievements in Chemical Engineering. The event was attended by several prominent figures, including VK Tewari, Director of IIT Kharagpur, as well as Pichai’s parents and daughter.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Pichai shared his gratitude and personal reflections on the occasion. He revealed that his parents had always hoped he would pursue a PhD, a dream he humorously acknowledged with his honorary degree. “Last week I was grateful to receive an honorary doctorate from my alma mater IIT Kharagpur. My parents always hoped I would get my doctorate; I think an honorary one still counts :)” he wrote.

Pichai expressed appreciation for the role IIT Kharagpur played in his career, noting, “The access to education and technology at IIT put me on a path to Google and helped more people access technology. IIT’s role in technology will only grow in importance with the AI revolution, and I will always be thankful for my time there.”

The post resonated with many, sparking comments from users who connected with the sentiments expressed. One user wrote, “Parents are all the same. Regardless of who Sundar Pichai is today, his parents are not satisfied without a PhD. They always want to see their children achieve more.” Another commented, “You deserve it, sir. You did more than any full-time doctorate could do.” A third user added, “Brown parents be like: You may be CEO, but you should still have that PhD.”

Pichai, who completed his B.Tech in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from IIT Kharagpur, went on to earn his M.S. in Engineering and Materials Science from Stanford University and an MBA from the Wharton School. He joined Google in 2004, where his career has flourished, and his time at IIT Kharagpur also saw him meet and later marry his classmate, Anjali.

The honorary degree from IIT Kharagpur not only acknowledges Pichai’s achievements but also underscores the enduring connection between him and the institution that played a pivotal role in his professional journey.
