“Singapore Issues Recall for Everest Fish Curry Masala Due to Excessive Pesticide Levels”

Singapore has issued a recall of Everest Fish Curry Masala imported from India, citing elevated levels of ethylene oxide detected in the product. Ethylene oxide, a chemical considered unsuitable for human consumption, was found to exceed permissible limits, prompting authorities to take swift action.

The recall follows a notification from the Centre for Food Safety in Hong Kong, which flagged the presence of ethylene oxide in Everest Fish Curry Masala beyond acceptable thresholds. The spice product is commonly used in Indian cuisine and is distributed by importer Sp Muthiah & Sons Pte. Ltd.

In response to the notification, the Singapore Food Agency directed the importer to initiate the recall, emphasizing the strict prohibition of ethylene oxide in food products. While ethylene oxide is sometimes used to fumigate agricultural produce for microbial control, its presence in spices at elevated levels raises concerns about potential health risks.

Singaporean regulations allow for limited application of ethylene oxide in spice sterilization. However, the levels detected in Everest Fish Curry Masala prompted authorities to prioritize consumer safety and take preventive measures.

“The Centre for Food Safety in Hong Kong has issued a notification on the recall of Everest Fish Curry Masala from India due to the presence of ethylene oxide at levels exceeding permissible limits,” stated the Singapore Food Agency in a released statement.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled product are advised to contact their point of purchase for inquiries and to seek medical advice if they have consumed the implicated products and have health concerns.
