“PM’s Raksha Bandhan Gift: LPG Prices Reduced by Rs 200, Boost for Ujjwala Yojana Beneficiaries”

PM's Raksha Bandhan Gift: LPG Price Cut by Rs 200, Benefits for Ujjwala Yojana Beneficiaries

In a significant move, the cost of domestic LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cylinders has been reduced by Rs 200, bringing relief to millions of households in India. The reduction in LPG prices is being hailed as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Raksha Bandhan gift to the nation, particularly benefiting around 75 lakh beneficiaries of the government’s Ujjwala Yojana.

The price reduction translates to a substantial Rs 400 reduction per cylinder for Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries. This move comes at a time when India is grappling with high inflation, offering a much-needed respite to low-income families across the country.

The decision to lower cooking gas prices holds significance as it coincides with crucial state elections this year and the general election scheduled for 2024. The government’s measure is aimed at providing financial relief to households and garnering support ahead of these important political events.

It’s important to note that the government will incur an additional expenditure of around Rs 4,000 crore to facilitate the increased subsidy, in addition to the Rs 7,600 crore already budgeted for the ongoing financial year.

The impact of the price reduction is notable across major cities. For instance, in Delhi, the cost of a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder will decrease from Rs 1,103 to Rs 903, while in Mumbai, the cylinder’s price will decrease from Rs 1,102.50 to Rs 902.50.

The Prime Minister’s Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries, who were already receiving a Rs 200 subsidy, will now enjoy a combined reduction of Rs 400 per cylinder. This will effectively bring down the cost of LPG cylinders to Rs 703 in Delhi and Rs 702.50 in Mumbai for Ujjwala beneficiaries.

Anurag Thakur, during the announcement, emphasized that Prime Minister Modi has consistently prioritized decisions in support of women’s empowerment. He highlighted the impact of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), which has benefited over 9.6 crore women since its launch in May 2016. Thakur announced that 75 lakh new gas connections will be provided free of cost under the PMUY, a significant move to further empower women.

The PMUY, a pivotal social welfare initiative, aims to provide economically disadvantaged women access to clean cooking fuel, thereby replacing traditional solid fuels like wood, coal, and biomass with cleaner and safer LPG.

As the nation welcomes this reduction in LPG prices and enhanced support for Ujjwala beneficiaries, the gesture serves as a timely reminder of the government’s commitment to improving the lives of citizens, particularly women, across the country.
