Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrapped up his spiritual pilgrimage to temples with a connection to the Ramayana in southern India, culminating his visit by offering prayers and performing rituals at a Lord Ram shrine near Arichal Munai in Tamil Nadu. This spiritual journey comes just ahead of the consecration of the grand Shri Ram temple in Ayodhya on January 22.
At the Sri Kothandaramaswamy temple, located on the way towards Dhanushkodi and Arichal Munai, PM Modi performed pooja, had darshan, and laid flowers on the Arichal Munai beachfront. The site, situated on the southern tip of Rameswaram island in Ramanathapuram district, holds significance in the Ramayana narrative.
The name “Kothandaramaswamy” in Tamil signifies Lord Ram with a bow and arrow. PM Modi also paid floral tributes at a pillar bearing the national emblem during his visit to Arichal Munai. The Prime Minister conducted ‘pranayama’ (breathing exercise) at the beach and offered prayers using seawater, marking the completion of his temple visits in the region.
Arichal Munai is known as the place from where, according to legend, the Ram Setu (also known as Adam’s Bridge) was built by Lord Ram with the assistance of the ‘Vaanara sena’ to reach Lanka for the battle against Ravana.
Having visited temples with Ramayana relevance in Andhra Pradesh and Kerala earlier in the week, PM Modi, who stayed in Rameswaram overnight, concluded his spiritual journey in Tamil Nadu. He then proceeded to Madurai and boarded an aircraft to New Delhi. Temple priests mentioned that PM Modi carried with him a ‘kalash’ containing holy waters from Tamil Nadu.
The Prime Minister’s visit to Tamil Nadu began on January 19, where he inaugurated the Khelo India Games 2023 in Chennai. On Saturday, he visited the Sri Ranganathaswamy and Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy temples in Srirangam and Rameswaram, respectively, as part of his spiritual itinerary.
