OYO founder and CEO Ritesh Agarwal recently revealed that he still cleans washrooms in his hotels as part of a “role-modelling exercise” to instill humility and break societal conditioning about work. Speaking at the Mumbai Tech Week on March 1, Agarwal emphasized that fear, embarrassment, pride, and arrogance are the biggest obstacles to entrepreneurial success.
“I still, sometimes, clean washrooms as a role-modelling exercise,” he said, as reported by Moneycontrol. He further advised budding entrepreneurs to shed hesitation and rigid work divisions, stating, “You have to leave ‘sharam’ (embarrassment) and ‘ye kaam mera hai ye kaam dusre ka hai’ (this is my work, and that is someone else’s)… Are you looking to be pride-seeking or wealth-seeking? I am very clear that I want to create a big impact.”
A Humorous Washroom-Related Incident
Agarwal also shared a funny anecdote about a time when he was approached with startup pitches while waiting in line for a washroom on an international flight. He recounted that he initially engaged with the first person out of respect, but a second person then stopped him from using the washroom to continue pitching their idea.
“I finally requested them that I want to use the washroom as it is urgent,” he said humorously, recalling the incident that went viral on social media. His humility and approachability have earned him praise online, with many users calling him an “amazing entrepreneur.”
