Meta Employee with ₹3 Crore Salary Dismissed for Misusing Meal Credits for Household Purchases

Meta Fires 24 Employees for Misusing Meal Credits

Meta has terminated 24 employees in Los Angeles after discovering they misused company-issued meal credits to purchase personal household items. According to a report by the Financial Times, these staff members were using their $25 meal credits to buy non-food items, including toothpaste, acne pads, and wine glasses.

Meta provides extensive meal options for its employees, particularly at its larger offices, where free food is available on campus. Employees at smaller locations receive daily allowances of $20 for breakfast, $25 for lunch, and $25 for dinner, intended for meals delivered to the office through services like Uber Eats and Grubhub. However, the company found that some employees were using these credits for personal expenses, including having food delivered to their homes.

The company clarified that only those who had consistently abused the system faced termination. Employees who occasionally used credits for personal items received warnings instead. One affected employee, who reported earning approximately ₹3.3 crore ($400,000) annually, shared their experience anonymously on the platform Blind. They explained that they had purchased items like toothpaste when they opted not to eat at the office, considering it a waste not to use the credit.

The sudden termination came as a shock to many, with the ex-employee describing the experience as “surreal” when confronted by HR.

Meta’s crackdown on this misuse highlights the increasing scrutiny on employee behavior and the importance of adhering to company policies.
