On October 9, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) in Bengaluru welcomed a high-profile delegation from the Maldives, led by President Mohammed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohammed. This visit marks a pivotal step towards strengthening trade ties between Karnataka and the island nation, focusing on sectors such as information technology, trade, and tourism.
During the welcoming address, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his pleasure in hosting the Maldivian delegation, noting the personal connection of the First Lady, who was a student in Bengaluru. “I am extremely pleased to host the visit of the delegation from Maldives led by the President and the First Lady at Bengaluru,” Siddaramaiah stated, emphasizing the significance of this diplomatic engagement.
Highlighting Karnataka’s reputation as the “Silicon Valley of India,” Siddaramaiah reiterated the state’s commitment to supporting the growth of the IT industry in the Maldives. “We have developed an ecosystem for start-ups, Artificial Intelligence, global capacity-building centres as well as an innovation hub,” he said.
In addition to technological partnerships, the Chief Minister expressed a desire to enhance trade relations, particularly in promoting Karnataka’s handicrafts and handlooms to the large number of tourists visiting the Maldives. “We would be happy to have trade ties with Maldives,” Siddaramaiah noted, underscoring the potential for mutual economic benefits.
Siddaramaiah also celebrated Karnataka’s natural and cultural richness, referencing the poet Kuvempu’s description of the state as “Sarva Janangada Shantiya Thota,” meaning “a garden of peace for all communities.”
President Muizzu’s visit aligns with ongoing efforts to bolster diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives. During his state visit to India, Muizzu reaffirmed the longstanding partnership, stating, “India has consistently proven to be a steadfast ally for the island nation.”
The discussions aim to enhance not only economic ties but also to foster educational and cultural exchanges, leveraging Karnataka’s diverse heritage to attract more tourists from the Maldives. The collaboration is expected to lay the groundwork for a robust and mutually beneficial relationship between the two regions in the coming years.
