“Majority of Indian App Developers Affected by Google Policy Regain Partial Access on Play Store”

Indian App Developers Regain Visibility on Google Play Store After Compliance with Payments Policy

Following Google’s decision to delist 10 Indian app developers from its Play Store for non-compliance with payments policy, a significant number of apps have been relisted after developers adhered to Google’s guidelines. As of Monday morning, nine out of the ten affected developers had some of their apps restored on the Play Store, marking a partial resolution to the issue.

The restoration of apps came as developers complied with Google’s policy, particularly by adopting a consumption-only model. This model requires developers to refrain from offering in-app payments to users, redirecting them instead to make payments via external websites. However, this approach introduces friction in the user experience, potentially deterring users from completing transactions, according to developers.

Snehil Khanor, representing TrulyMadly, emphasized that the apps returned due to compliance rather than any reversal of Google’s decision. Khanor clarified that developers opted for the consumption-only model as a temporary measure to ensure the visibility of their apps on the Play Store.

While some developers, such as Info Edge, managed to have all of their apps relisted swiftly, others faced more challenges. Matrimony.com, for instance, saw only a fraction of its numerous matrimonial apps restored. Similarly, Cold Brew Tech’s apps remain delisted, indicating ongoing complications in the restoration process.

Government intervention has also entered the fray, with IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw scheduling a meeting with Google and the ten affected app developers on Monday. This move suggests a heightened level of attention and concern from the government regarding the issue.

Developers stressed that the restoration of apps was selective, indicating that only apps complying with Google’s policies were relisted. This fact reinforces the notion that compliance, rather than any external intervention, drove the restoration process.

Despite the partial resolution, concerns remain among developers regarding the long-term implications of Google’s policies on their businesses. The friction introduced by the consumption-only model raises questions about user experience and revenue generation strategies within the app ecosystem.

As the discussions between Google, the Indian government, and app developers unfold, the tech community will be closely watching for further developments and potential resolutions to ensure a fair and conducive environment for app development and distribution.
