The Karnataka government has officially implemented a statewide cap on movie ticket prices, ensuring that no film screening charges more than ₹200 per ticket. This regulation, which applies to all films and theaters, including multiplexes, is intended to make cinema more accessible and affordable for audiences.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the decision during his budget speech, stating that the price ceiling would be enforced uniformly across the state. While Karnataka had previously attempted to regulate ticket prices, the policy was not strictly implemented. Over the years, ticket rates, especially in Bengaluru, have skyrocketed, with some multiplexes charging over ₹600 per ticket during the initial days of a film’s release.
The move has surprised film producers, who frequently seek price hikes for big-budget releases. However, the government is determined to ensure that cinema remains affordable to the general public. Officials confirmed that the new rule would be enforced soon across the state.
DK Shivakumar’s Remarks on Film Industry
The decision comes amid Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s recent remarks on the film industry, where he took a strong stance on government oversight in movie productions. At a public event, Shivakumar noted that film productions depend on government approvals for shooting locations and suggested that he knew “where to tighten the nuts and bolts” if necessary, hinting at stricter regulation and compliance enforcement.
He also criticized the Karnataka film industry for its lack of participation in the Bangalore International Film Festival (BIFF). Furthermore, he expressed disappointment that the industry did not support the Congress-led Mekedatu Padayatra in 2022, when the party was in opposition. Shivakumar urged film personalities to take an active role in social and political movements concerning Karnataka’s land, language, and water issues.
With the new ₹200 price cap, Karnataka joins other states that have sought to regulate movie ticket pricing. The impact of this decision on box office collections and the overall business model of multiplex chains remains to be seen.
