The Centre has commenced the auction of telecom spectrum valued at ₹96,238.45 crore, signaling a significant step in bolstering telecommunications infrastructure in India. The auction, which began on Tuesday, involves a total quantum of 10,522.35 MHz across various bands.

According to the Ministry of Communications, the spectrum bands available for bidding include 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2500 MHz, 3300 MHz, and 26 GHz. These bands have been allocated specific reserve prices, with the 1800 MHz band leading at ₹21,752.4 crore, followed closely by the 800 MHz band at ₹21,341.25 crore.

The auction has drawn interest from three major telecom players in the country: Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and Reliance Jio Infocomm. The government’s objective behind the auction is to enhance existing telecom services, ensuring continuity and facilitating affordable, high-quality services nationwide.

Initiated by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on March 8, the spectrum auction will assign spectrum for a 20-year period. Successful bidders will have the option to make payments in 20 equal annual instalments, maintaining the Net Present Value (NPV) at an interest rate of 8.65 percent.

Furthermore, spectrum acquired through this auction can be surrendered after a minimum of 10 years. Notably, there will be no Spectrum Usage Charges (SUC) for spectrum acquired during this auction, as stated by the ministry.

The auction represents a pivotal moment in India’s telecom sector, aligning with the government’s commitment to providing advanced telecom services to all citizens while promoting competition and innovation among telecom operators.
