“Delhi Prepares for G20 Summit: Offices, Schools, and Shops to Temporarily Close”

Delhi Braces for G20 Summit Impact: Offices, Schools, and Shops to Close from September 8-10

As the G20 Summit, a high-profile assembly of world leaders, approaches, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced that all government, municipal corporation, and private offices, as well as schools, will be closed from September 8 to September 10. This decision comes after the Delhi Police’s Special Commissioner recommended a government holiday during the summit to manage potential traffic congestion and logistical complexities.

The G20 Summit, slated for September 9 and September 10, will convene at Delhi’s modern Bharat Mandapam convention centre in Pragati Maidan, under the stewardship of India’s presidency. The gathering will witness the participation of leaders from the globe’s largest economies, including prominent figures such as US President Joe Biden, Chinese Premier Xi Jinping, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and French President Emmanuel Macron.

To ensure seamless vehicular movement during the summit, the Delhi traffic police are orchestrating special measures. A mock drill was conducted on major roads connecting Pragati Maidan with hotels, involving multiple teams of traffic police personnel stationed at junctions and diversion points. This exercise is pivotal in reviewing and refining restriction and diversion strategies.

The G20 summit’s agenda aims to facilitate discussions on global economic concerns, policy coordination, and collaboration across various sectors. The convergence of heads of state, economic experts, and representatives underscores the significance of effective coordination between law enforcement agencies and the local government.

In preparation for the event, the Delhi Police are enhancing their capabilities, with a focus on handling chemical and biological threats. Notably, nineteen women commandos from the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit of the Delhi Police underwent specialized training, conducted by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), to equip them for potential security challenges. Additionally, the police force has acquired specialized weaponry, ammunition, bulletproof jackets, and X-ray machines to bolster their security apparatus.

As Delhi readies itself to host the G20 Summit, the temporary closures and enhanced security measures underscore the city’s commitment to ensuring a smooth and secure environment for the esteemed gathering of global leaders.
