Defence Ministry Signs ₹2,867 Crore Contracts to Enhance Navy’s Submarine Strength

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed two significant contracts worth ₹2,867 crore to bolster the Indian Navy’s underwater warfare capabilities. The agreements focus on retrofitting Kalvari-class submarines with Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems to increase their endurance and integrating electronic heavy-weight torpedoes (EHWT) to enhance their firepower.

Strengthening Submarine Capabilities

A ₹1,990-crore contract was inked with Mumbai-based Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) for constructing an AIP plug developed indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and integrating it into Kalvari-class submarines. The AIP technology will extend the submarines’ underwater endurance and align with India’s self-reliance initiative, “Aatmanirbhar Bharat.” The project is expected to create employment opportunities equivalent to three lakh man-days.

In addition, an ₹877-crore agreement with France’s Naval Group was finalized for integrating electronic heavy-weight torpedoes to enhance the firepower of the Kalvari-class submarines. This collaborative effort involves the Indian Navy, DRDO, and the Naval Group, underscoring international and domestic partnership in defense innovation.

Kalvari-Class Submarines

The Kalvari-class (Scorpene) diesel-electric attack submarines, built by MDL with technology transfer from Naval Group, are versatile platforms capable of anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, long-range strikes, special operations, and intelligence gathering. The Indian Navy currently operates five such submarines, with plans to commission its sixth and final vessel, Vagsheer, under the ₹23,562-crore Project 75 initiative.

The AIP systems will be installed during scheduled refits, enabling the submarines to remain submerged for longer durations, a critical capability in modern naval warfare.

Strategic Importance

Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh witnessed the signing of these contracts, which are expected to significantly enhance India’s naval prowess. The addition of AIP technology and advanced torpedoes aligns with India’s broader efforts to modernize its naval fleet and secure its maritime interests.

The integration of these systems marks a step forward in self-reliance and defense collaboration, reinforcing India’s capabilities in safeguarding its underwater domain.
