Centre Confirms No Plans to Change Retirement Age of Government Employees

Minister Jitendra Singh Clarifies Government Stance in Lok Sabha

The central government has made it clear that it is not considering any changes to the retirement age of government employees, Union Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh announced on Wednesday.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Singh confirmed that no proposal is under review to increase or decrease the current retirement age. He also stated that the government does not plan to abolish the vacancies created due to retiring employees.

No Formal Proposal for Retirement Age Change

When asked if any government employees’ unions or organizations had requested a revision of the retirement age, Singh responded that “no formal proposal has been received from the staff side of the National Council (Joint Consultative Machinery).”

The minister also clarified that data on retirement ages across central and state government employees is not centrally maintained, as the matter falls under the State List.

Fake Social Media Claims Debunked

In November last year, a viral post on social media falsely claimed that the Centre planned to increase the retirement age of central government employees from 60 to 62, effective from April 1, 2025. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) later debunked this claim, labeling it as fake.

The false post attributed the alleged increase to factors such as rising life expectancy, higher demand for experienced employees, reduced pension costs, and administrative continuity. However, the government has now reaffirmed that no such changes are being planned.

No Immediate Policy Shifts Expected

With Singh’s latest statement, government employees can be assured that their retirement policies will remain unchanged for the foreseeable future. Any revisions, if proposed in the future, would require formal review and consultation with relevant stakeholders.
