In a significant move towards promoting sustainable mobility and strengthening the electric vehicle industry in India, Ashok Leyland, one of the country’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturers, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Uttar Pradesh government to establish an electric bus manufacturing unit in the state.
The MoU was formalized during a special ceremony held in the presence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, solidifying the company’s commitment to driving the future of the commercial vehicle sector. While the precise location for this new unit remains under consideration, Ashok Leyland has expressed interest in utilizing approximately 70 acres of land owned by Scooters India Limited (SIL) in Lucknow for this purpose.
Infrastructure and Industrial Development Commissioner Manoj Kumar Singh shared details about the project, stating, “An investment ranging from ₹200 to ₹500 crore will be made in the initial phase, with plans to further invest ₹1,000 crore. The company also envisions manufacturing batteries at this facility.”
Chairman of Ashok Leyland, Dheeraj Hinduja, announced that the new manufacturing unit in Uttar Pradesh is expected to be operational within the next 18 months. He expressed his enthusiasm for this venture, saying, “The MoU reaffirms our commitment to shaping the future of the commercial vehicle industry. We are excited to venture into the vibrant state of Uttar Pradesh and are confident that this facility will contribute positively to generating employment opportunities and promoting sustainable mobility in India.”
It is reported that the company plans to initially manufacture 2,500 electric buses annually, with potential capacity expansion to 5,000 in the future. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has urged Ashok Leyland to accelerate production to supply electric vehicles for the Prayagraj Kumbh Mela in 2025, an event that holds significant importance in the state.
Chief Minister Adityanath emphasized the government’s commitment to providing a conducive environment for investors, ensuring security, and offering essential facilities. He highlighted the state’s transformation, where industrial groups that once shied away from Uttar Pradesh are now expanding their presence. Adityanath stressed that the state government is actively promoting the manufacturing and operation of electric vehicles and has implemented supportive policies.
Chairman Hinduja commended the swift decision-making process in Uttar Pradesh, with discussions commencing on August 10 and the MoU being signed on September 15. He encouraged other states to follow this efficient model to drive industrial growth.
Uttar Pradesh Minister for Industrial Development, Export Promotion, NRI, and Investment Promotion, Nand Gopal Gupta ‘Nandi,’ lauded Ashok Leyland’s initiative as a significant boost to the region’s economy. He highlighted the potential for increased employment opportunities and skills development for the youth.
Ashok Leyland’s decision to establish an electric bus manufacturing unit in Uttar Pradesh represents a crucial step in the state’s journey towards sustainable mobility and economic growth, marking a collaborative effort between the government and the private sector to promote environmentally friendly transportation solutions.
