Air India has announced a significant enhancement to its services, with the deployment of its top narrowbody aircraft on five key metro routes starting from December. The move follows the recent merger of Vistara into Air India, which is expected to improve the airline’s customer offerings and operational efficiency.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Air India revealed that Vistara’s A320-series aircraft will be used for high-frequency routes connecting major metro cities. This includes flights from Delhi to Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, as well as from Mumbai to Hyderabad and Bengaluru. These flights will feature a range of seating options, including business, premium economy, and economy class.
Campbell Wilson, the CEO and Managing Director of Air India, expressed optimism about the merger, stating that it had opened up many new opportunities to enhance customer experiences. “By combining the strengths of both full-service carriers, we are able to consolidate our best narrowbody offering on routes where there is a demand for high-frequency and full-service products,” Wilson said.
The airline has committed to expanding the coverage of these services, with plans to deploy more aircraft as it inducts new planes and completes the retrofit of its legacy fleet by 2025. Air India aims to offer a seamless experience with these flights operating under AI-prefixed four-digit flight numbers, such as AI2999 for Delhi to Mumbai.
With over 1,000 weekly flights operating on metro routes, Air India is focused on enhancing comfort and convenience for passengers. These newly upgraded flights will feature an array of seating options. In business class, eight seats with 41 inches of pitch and 7 inches of recline will be available. Premium economy class will offer 24 seats, each with 33 inches of pitch and 4 inches of recline. Economy class will offer 132 seats with 29 inches of standard pitch and 3 inches of recline.
The airline also plans to optimise its flight schedules to ensure regular departures throughout the day without reducing the frequency of services. Flights will be available for booking on Air India’s website, mobile app, and through authorised travel agents.
For its international services, Air India will continue to operate widebody flights between Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, using Boeing 777 or Airbus A350 aircraft.
With this new initiative, Air India aims to solidify its position as a leading full-service carrier on domestic routes while ensuring an upgraded and comfortable travel experience for its passengers.
