In a landmark development for Pakistan-China relations, a Chinese business delegation has pledged to invest $1 billion in establishing a state-of-the-art medical city in Karachi. The announcement was made during a meeting with Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, and the Chinese Consul General on Thursday.
The medical city, to be located in Karachi’s Dhabeji Economic Zone near the country’s financial hub, will be Pakistan’s first fully integrated pharmaceutical and medical ecosystem. This initiative underscores the growing economic ties between Pakistan and China, which have historically been bolstered by projects such as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
A Boost to Bilateral Cooperation
The Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI), which manages the Dhabeji Economic Zone, hailed the investment as a testament to the strengthening partnership between the two nations. President Zardari emphasized the importance of fostering deeper economic and trade relations with China, highlighting Pakistan’s commitment to facilitating Chinese investments.
“We welcome Chinese investors and are determined to provide them with every possible support,” Zardari stated.
The Chinese delegation also expressed interest in other key sectors, including agriculture, livestock, energy, transport, and manufacturing, signaling a broader scope for economic collaboration.
Removing Barriers and Enhancing Ties
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah noted that the provincial government has introduced Chinese language courses to overcome linguistic barriers and enhance cultural ties between the two countries. This initiative aligns with the government’s efforts to create a conducive environment for foreign investments.
Strategic Significance
The proposed medical city is expected to play a vital role in transforming Pakistan’s healthcare and pharmaceutical industries, fostering innovation, and generating employment. It also highlights China’s ongoing support for Pakistan’s economic growth through strategic investments in critical sectors.
As the two nations continue to deepen their economic partnership, the $1 billion medical city project stands as a symbol of the enduring friendship and shared vision between Pakistan and China.
