In one of the largest drug busts in the national capital, Delhi police have seized over 560 kg of cocaine valued at nearly ₹2,000 crore. The operation, carried out in the Mehrauli area of South Delhi, resulted in the arrest of four individuals suspected to be part of an international drug syndicate allegedly run by Afghan nationals.
According to police officials, the arrested individuals had plans to distribute the cocaine across Delhi and the National Capital Region. The successful bust comes after two months of intensive surveillance and intelligence-gathering by the Special Cell team, who acted on a tip-off just ahead of the festive season.
Recent Arrests Linked to Afghan Nationals
The drug seizure follows the recent arrest of two other Afghan nationals for allegedly operating a drug syndicate in the city. These individuals were apprehended during a raid in Tilak Nagar, where police recovered 400 grams of heroin and 160 grams of cocaine. The two accused, identified as Hashimi Mohammad Waris and Abdul Nayib, are also Afghan nationals who arrived in India in early 2020.
Waris has been living in India on refugee status since January 2020, while his family remains in Afghanistan. Initially working as a helper in a chemist shop in Vikaspuri, Waris was drawn into the drug trade after being contacted by a friend who asked him to collect and deliver drug consignments throughout Delhi and NCR. Police reports indicate that he received $100 for each delivery made.
Similarly, Nayib came to India in January 2020 with his father and is also a registered refugee. He met Waris while working in the same chemist shop, leading to their collaboration in the drug business.
Ongoing Efforts Against Drug Trafficking
The recent drug bust highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking in the region. Authorities are actively investigating the network behind the cocaine operation and are determined to dismantle the syndicate involved.
The Delhi police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to assist in their fight against the drug trade. As the investigation continues, officials aim to ensure that those involved in such illicit activities are brought to justice.
