As India embarks on its grand festive season, which culminates with Diwali, quick commerce platforms Blinkit and Swiggy Instamart have reported remarkable sales milestones during Raksha Bandhan 2024. Both companies surpassed their 2023 performance, reflecting the growing reliance on these platforms for festival shopping.
Blinkit’s CEO, Albinder Dhindsa, took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce a series of record-breaking achievements. “We’ll cross all-time high orders in a day on Blinkit in a couple of minutes. We also hit our highest ever OPM (Orders Per Minute), GMV, chocolate sales, and most other metrics today! At its peak, we hit 693 RPM (Rakhis Per Minute). Thank you to all our customers (especially the ones who placed their first Blinkit order today) for trusting our service. Happy Raksha Bandhan to all,” Dhindsa shared.
In addition to the domestic success, Blinkit expanded its operations internationally for the occasion, allowing orders from six countries: the USA, Canada, Netherlands, Germany, France, and Japan. This move highlights the platform’s ambition to cater to the global Indian diaspora during significant cultural celebrations.
Blinkit, formerly known as Grofers, was acquired by Zomato in a USD 570 million all-stock deal in 2022. The company has since been making strides in the quick commerce sector, with the latest Raksha Bandhan performance being a testament to its growing influence.
Swiggy Instamart also reported an unprecedented surge in sales. Co-founder Phani Kishan shared on X, “Raksha Bandhan celebrations are in full swing – clocking higher orders per minute (OPM) than our peak yesterday, which was already a historical high.” He further added, “We expect to sell as many rakhis today as we have sold all year, and that’s already 5x more than last year!”
The previous day, Kishan had excitedly posted about the company’s stellar performance: “We’ve sold 5x the number of rakhis this year on @SwiggyInstamart compared to all of last year, and Raksha Bandhan is still tomorrow!”
These developments underscore the growing trend of consumers turning to quick commerce platforms for their festival shopping needs, particularly during major occasions like Raksha Bandhan. With record-breaking sales and expanding reach, Blinkit and Swiggy Instamart are setting the stage for what promises to be a bustling festive season in India.
