11-Year-Old Chinese Boy Develops Rocket by Coding 600 Lines of Software

An 11-year-old boy from Zhejiang, China, has captivated the world with his remarkable achievement in aerospace technology. Yan Hongsen, whose fascination with rockets began at the tender age of four, has made headlines for writing 600 lines of code to build his own rocket. His story has quickly become a sensation on social media, drawing admiration and support from around the globe.

Yan’s interest in space was ignited when he witnessed the launch of the Long March-2 rocket. Since then, he has pursued his passion with intense dedication, enrolling in online courses and self-studying physics and chemistry. His efforts culminated in August 2022 when he embarked on a 10-month project to build his first homemade solid-fuel rocket, named Sen Xing.

The launch took place in June 2023. Despite the rocket crashing due to a parachute malfunction, Yan’s response was notably composed. “The nitrocellulose didn’t explode as expected, and the spring and lithium battery were damaged. There may still be an issue with the rocket’s body connection,” Yan explained, showing a mature understanding of the technical issues at hand.

Yan’s next steps involve refining his design for a second rocket. His long-term ambition is to join one of China’s prestigious civilian defense universities and eventually contribute to China’s space exploration efforts. His journey and accomplishments have been documented extensively on social media, where he has garnered over 440,000 followers.

The young inventor’s parents have played a crucial role in supporting his endeavors. They transformed their living room into a makeshift rocket research studio to facilitate Yan’s work. Yan’s father expressed immense pride in his son’s achievements. “Although the rocket crashed, I considered its first flight a triumph. I was over the moon with excitement, but my son took it in stride, remaining remarkably calm and composed,” he said.

The story of Yan Hongsen has not only earned him recognition on Chinese social media but also attracted global attention from educators, technology enthusiasts, and space aficionados. His parents’ unwavering support and Yan’s determination have been widely praised, highlighting the extraordinary potential of young talent in the field of aerospace.
