Kerala Auction Sees ‘0007’ Number Sold for ₹45 Lakh for Lamborghini Urus

In a record-setting online auction hosted by Kerala’s Motor Vehicles Department (MVD), the registration number ‘KL 07 DG 0007’ fetched a staggering ₹45.99 lakh. The iconic number, made famous by the James Bond franchise, was acquired by a private company for their luxury Lamborghini Urus, worth ₹4 crore, registered at the Ernakulam Regional Transport Office (RTO).

According to The Hindu, the auction took place on April 7 and saw intense bidding after five individuals paid the initial booking fee of ₹25,000, triggering the competitive process. With a minimum increment of ₹1,000 and no upper limit, the bidding escalated quickly, eventually narrowing down to two contenders. The winning bid of ₹45.99 lakh surpassed the previous bid of ₹44.84 lakh.

Although only the booking fee has been paid so far, MVD sources confirmed that the prized number will be officially assigned only after the full bid amount is settled.

Another fancy number, ‘KL 07 DG 0001’, was also auctioned recently and sold for ₹25.52 lakh. That number was reportedly assigned to a vehicle owner from Piravom. It had a higher base price of ₹1 lakh.

Inside the Auction Process

Kerala’s MVD conducts fancy number auctions via the Parivahan portal. Bookings can be made from Monday to Saturday at 4:30 pm, with the auction concluding on Monday mornings at around 10:30 am. If no bids are made within 10 minutes of the closing time, the number is officially allotted.

The government has categorized fancy numbers into six groups, with base prices ranging from ₹3,000 to ₹1 lakh. Some of the most popular numbers, like “1”, have the highest starting bids. Between 2017 and 2022, the Ernakulam RTO alone contributed ₹11.84 crore to the state exchequer through fancy number auctions, according to a 2023 RTI response.

The craze for unique registration numbers continues to grow in Kerala, as luxury vehicle owners are increasingly willing to pay lakhs to stand out on the road. This latest auction sets a new benchmark for how far individuals are ready to go for that perfect plate.
